Tašmajdan Park
Belgrade is known for its large and beautifully landscaped parks and Tašmajdan park is one of the most popular ones. Located near the city center, it is a green oasis that can be entered directly from the most famous boulevard in the city - Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard (King Alexander Boulevard).
What adorns Tašmajdan are the playgrounds designed for children, different ones for various ages, from the youngest ones to the ones a bit older. A special site is a beautiful fountain at the entrance and the famous St. Mark's Church at the exit of the park.
You will meet some recreationists here, because a neatly designed trim track passes through one part of the park, but also fans of the open-air chess venue, set aside in a special setting. What is particularly interesting about the park actually lies beneath its surface.
Since all the old buildings in Belgrade were, as per one testimony, built with stone that was quarried in this very place, there are catacombs beneath the park that were also used as military ammunition storage rooms. Hence the name Tašmajdan ('quarry' in Turkish), i.e. a place where the stone is quarried.
Church of St. Marko
Next to the Church of St. Sava – there is a church that stands out for its imposingness and beauty in the eyes of the visitors. What makes the Church of St. Marko so unique is the fact that the church holds the Virgin of Belgrade miracle icon, as well as the largest mosaic of the Virgin in the world - “Holly Mother of God larger than Heaven”. How important this church is for Serbian history is shown by the fact that the tomb of Emperor Dušan is placed inside the church, as well the last king of the dynasty Obrenović – Aleksandar.
According to the style of construction, the Church of St. Mark corresponds to the Serbian medieval century construction style.
