Great War Island and Lido
Belgrade has no sea, but that is why it has beaches! Ada Ciganlija has gravel beaches, however, there are also those with fine sand like Lido beach. It is a favorite summer resort for people who live in Zemun, and the beach is located at the entrance of the Great War Island. Lido can only be reached via the pontoon bridge at the end of June or at the beginning of July. The Serbian Army river vessels connect the island with Zemun quay. During summer months at, so called, the “Zemun Sea” various interesting events are being organized for every generation.
If you prefer the shade more than lying in the sun, go ahead and take a walk along the Great War island. Over there, you will find paths that lead through the forest and nature, which is under the state protection as a natural good.
Gardoš and Millenium Tower
The story goes that one of the oldest European settlements originated right from the Gardoš hill in Zemun. One of the most special gems of Gardoš is the famous Millennium Tower (or Janos Hunyadi's Tower), which was erected here as part of the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Empire. At the end of the 19th century, four such towers were built (one in each part of the world) - the one in Zemun is the only one preserved outside the territory of today's Hungary.
Another special site is the scenic viewpoint at the terrace of the tower, from where you can get one of the most beautiful views of Belgrade. By the way, the tower was built in the central part of the fortification dating from the 14th century, which is the oldest one preserved in this region, as well.
