A walk through the city center

Terazije

Terazije is the most prominent square in Belgrade. Belgraders and guests of the city alike gather here. You will notice the famous Terazije fountain which is located between the two most famous hotels in Belgrade - the Moskva and the Balkan.

At the end of the 19th century and in the middle of the 20th century, Terazije was the centre of social life. Some of the most popular taverns were located here, such as the Šiško’s kafana, where the Terazije Theatre is located today (the only theatre in Belgrade where musicals are performed), and the kafana Albania, on whose foundations the Palace Albania, one of the symbols of Belgrade, is located today. Terazije got its present form after a major reconstruction in 1947, when the squares, the fountain and the tram tracks were removed.

Knez Mihailova

Knez Mihailova is the most famous street in Belgrade! So much so that Knez Mihailova and Belgrade have become synonymous! The most famous pedestrian zone in Serbia used to be a street for cars, but in 1987 it became a pedestrian zone. Today, it is a street where you can shop, stroll, meet a famous person, or simply enjoy one of the many cafes and restaurants.

The main promenade of Belgrade is also rich in institutions such as the gallery of the Belgrade Cultural Centre, the building of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts with its gallery, the Zepter Museum, the Belgrade City Library, in the basement of which there is a Roman hall with the remains of an arch and an aqueduct from the Roman period, as well as the cultural centres of France, Spain and Germany.

This street is always full of life, and various street artists contribute to it, which you will meet in several places, from the starting point  near the Albania Palace to the end, which is in front of the entrance to Kalemegdan Park.

Topličin venac

Topličin venac is a real cultural and historical gem of the city. It is named after the famous hero Toplica Milan, who participated in the battle of Kosovo. The same Milan who appears in the famous painting with the Kosovo Maiden. Besides Kosančićev and Obilićev venac, this is the third round street located in the very centre of the city, on the way to the Kalemegdan fortress. In the past, it was a busy section opening onto Brankova Street, and now, after the reconstruction in 2018, it has been turned into a quiet corner to enjoy. Topličin venac is dominated by Duke Vuk Park, where there is a monument to Vojin Popović, better known as Duke Vuk (participant in important battles of the First World War). In addition to enjoying the park, you will also enjoy the beautiful cafes and restaurants that surround it, and considering that it is located just a few meters from Knez Mihailova Street, Topličin venac is in a perfect location for walking routes.

Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel

The Cathedral Church of St Michael the Archangel is the oldest church in Belgrade. In 1284, King Dragutin built the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary on this site. However, after Serbia fell under the rule of the Turks, the church was turned into a mosque and was looted and destroyed several times - but was rebuilt each time. Finally, in 1836, Prince Miloš Obrenović ordered that it be completely demolished and rebuilt from the ground up, so that today it is a spacious temple. This appearance was given to the cathedral in 1840, and since then it has captivated with its beauty.

Inside the church are kept the relics of the holy Prince Lazar, in the crypt on the right are buried Prince Miloš Obrenović and his sons Mihailo and Milan, and in the courtyard in front of the main entrance are the graves of two great Serbian educators - Vuk Karadžić and Dositej Obradović.

Kosančićev venac

Kosančićev venac is one of three round streets located in the strict centre of the city. It is named after the knight Ivan Kosančić, who, in addition to his skill with the sword (the story goes that he could fight with two swords in his hands at once), was also famous for his beauty. This part of the city is one of the few in which the original Belgrade architecture has been preserved. The cobbled streets give a special charm to Kosančićev venac, which, besides being the oldest part of Belgrade, is also known for the oldest kafana in the city, but also in Europe - the "Question Mark". In this part of the city you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets, with a view of the Sava River and New Belgrade, while having a drink in one of the cafes. At the same time, you can enjoy a glass of good wine surrounded by the atmosphere that used to characterise old Belgrade.
