Kalemegdan
Kalemegdan (Kalemegdan Fortress) is one of the symbols of Belgrade and a must-see attraction. It is divided into the Upper Town, the Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park. It is a former military fortification that was used to defend the city until the 18th century, and is now the largest open-air museum in the city. The most famous view of the city is represented by the plateau on which there is a monument to Pobednik, which was originally intended to be located on Terazije. While walking along Kalemegdan, visit the clock tower, the zoo, the Roman well, the large gunpowder shop, the military museum, the Nebojša tower and the rich exhibits of the natural history museum.
From the plateau of the Kalemegdan fortress you have the best view of the confluence of the Danube and the Sava, but also of New Belgrade and Zemun.
Military Museum
When you walk around the Kalemegdan fortress and notice cannons and tanks in a large canal – you will know that you have reached the Military Museum. It has been part of the Fortress since 1924 and was built for the purposes of the Military Geographical Institute. Today, it houses a permanent exhibit presenting historical periods and events from Serbian history. Here you will see the most diverse examples of weapons, suits, decorations, flags and objects that belonged to important historical figures. However, cannons from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as heavy weaponry from WWI and WWII, anti-aircraft guns etc. are a special attraction.
The Belgrade Below Belgrade Tour
Belgrade is a city that will not show you everything right away. Probably the most interesting tour around the city will take you below the level of its streets: the "Belgrade below Belgrade" tour. It was created in 2012 by journalist Zoran Nikolić, who is also the author of the eponymous bestseller. During this walk, starting on Kalemegdan near the Monument of Gratitude to France, you will learn the secrets beneath the Kalemegdan fortress, you will see what the Roman well looks like, you will find out where the Yugoslavian Secret Service bunker was located, what the oldest Belgrade monument in Barutana looks like, but you will also hear stories about bohemians in one of the three wine cellars that are available to the public.
